Gold , silver and platinum , and most recently, palladium , must all be hallmarked by UK law. Gold including all variations of it like white, yellow and rose gold must be further hallmarked as 9K, 14K, 18K and 22K standards, and so on.

Read more about the difference between gold karats here. Silver, platinum and palladium must also satisfy a percentage of purity to meet UK hallmarking requirements. Compulsory hallmarking means that the public will always have a guarantee of genuine quality in their jewellery. Assay Office laboratories now test precious metal purity using the latest technologies, including x-ray and laser analysis. However, many objects are still stamped by hand, exactly as they were years ago.

Remember that the address of the shop and the address mentioned in the licence should be the same. You should also check your bill properly. The regulations require the jeweller to mention the hallmarking charges separately in the bill. Also, a jeweller registered with BIS can sell the jewellery of another BIS-licensed jeweller, provided there is proof of such purchases.

The bill should also have this detail. A jeweller is required to maintain all the records related to invoices of hallmarking charges paid, sale and purchase of hallmarked items for a period of five years or till the jewellery is sold, whichever is later, according to BIS regulations. The licence is issued for a period of three years and has to be renewed thereafter.

You can also verify the mark of the AHC from the list available. The list also shows the name of AHCs whose licence has been cancelled or suspended.

BIS conducts periodic inspection of AHCs and can suspend and cancel the certification of those that violate the regulations. They can either take a sample from a jewellery shop and test it for purity or they can make a surprise visit to the hallmarking centre to check for malpractices.

In case the centre fails the test of hallmarking, the AHC can be suspended. Suspension is generally for three months in case of market sample failure and violations happening inside hallmarking centres," said Jose. There is also a list of major offences, including unfair practices such as hallmarking for non-certified jewellers, marking of articles with incomplete hallmark or hallmarking articles without carrying out testing.
